PAUL, Minn., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- RxHub® today announced th at its proprietary data transaction format for Medication History information, which was submitted to the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP), a not-for-profit ANSI-accredited Standards Development, has been approved and incorporated into the NCPDP SCRIPT Standard Version 8.0 and approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). This announcement is significant in its impact to the national eprescribing program, but most importantly demonstrates how the eprescribing stakeholders, including chain and independent pharmacies, consulting companies and pharmacists, database management organizations, federal and state agencies, health insurers, health maintenance organizations, mail service pharmacy companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, pharmaceutical services administration organizations, prescription service organizations, pharmacy benefit management companies, professional and trade associations, telecommunication and systems vendors, wholesale drug distributors, worked collaboratively to come to consensus on specifications for these data transactions and completed this work in an unprecedented timeframe. ADVERTISEMENT "The beauty of our organization and our standards development process is the spirit of collaboration brought forth by different companies and healthcare segments," said NCPDP President, Lee Ann Stember. "RxHub is one of the leaders in making true e-Prescribing a reality. Their efforts in regard to developing the NCPDP SCRIPT Standard have been invaluable to our membership and the industry." The Formulary and Benefits file load transaction developed by RxHub also submitted to NCPDP passed the membership vote and is currently in the 30-day appeals period. It is anticipated for approval by the NCPDP Board in October with a parallel track for ANSI accreditation. January 1, 2006 marks the beginning of the new Medicare Prescription Drug Improvement and Modernization Act (MMA), for Medicare part D beneficiaries. This program has a part of its requirements, compliance with an eprescribing program. This program stipulates that Part D sponsors, including Prescription Drug Plan (PDP) sponsors and Medicare Advantage (MA) Organizations offering Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug (MA-PD) plans must support and comply with electronic prescribing standards relating to covered Part D drugs for Part D enrollees once final standards are in effect. Initial eprescribing standards will be announced by the Secretary of HHS by end of September 2005, and a "request for application" to participate in pilot tests of these standards from January through December 2006 was published on September 15, 2005. "True eprescribing is not only the transfer of a prescription in electronic format from a physician's office to the patient's pharmacy, as MMA expanded this definition to require the real time electronic delivery to providers and pharmacists of patient-specific information on eligibility, benefits, medication history, and the availability of generics in a secure format that complies with health privacy regulations," said David McLean, CEO of RxHub. "We have been providing an end-to-end eprescribing solution to the market for several years, and with the recent approval by NCPDP of the Medication History transaction as a new SCRIPT message and Formulary and Benefits File Load as a new NCPDP standard, the number of our partners that are in compliance with the new eprescribing program is significant."
