Patient Recruitment Plays a Major Role in Meeting Clinical Trial Deadlines

Press Release
August 31, 2005

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., August 31, 2005 /PRNewswire/ -- The leading cause of missed clinical trial deadlines is patient recruitment, taking up 30% of the clinical timeline, according to a report, "Ac celerating Clinical Trials: Budgets, Patient Recruitment and Productivity," published by pharmaceutical market research leader Cutting Edge Information.

On average, inefficient patient recruitment can cause clinical trials to last 42% longer than expected in Phase I, 31% longer in Phase II and 30% in Phase III. These delays are extremely costly to pharmaceutical companies, costing an estimated $600,000 per day in lost sales for niche products and as much as $8 million per day for potential blockbusters. The average biopharmaceutical company allocates more than $167 million dollars for clinical affairs budgets, 60% of which is spent on internally run and outsourced trial operations. Surprisingly, only 14% of the clinical trials budget is used on patient recruitment efforts.

Companies can improve how they recruit patients by using more focused methods rather than many traditional mass media outlets. Continuous support of clinical operations with substantial funding will also further patient recruitment and accelerate trial timelines. Once such improvements are made, drug companies will be able to overcome increasing competition for patients, rising FDA patient requirements and the need for more tests, thus allowing them to promptly meet deadlines.

"If companies want to complete clinical trials on time to bring drugs to market faster, they must invest more intelligently and heavily in patient recruitment," notes Jon Hess, a senior analyst at Cutting Edge Information. "Smarter budgeting involves allocating funds to the highest return-on- investment patient recruitment channels and remaining flexible enough to adjust recruitment plans mid-stream."

"Accelerating Clinical Trials: Budgets, Patient Recruitment and Productivity" is a comprehensive report featuring metrics and business practices from several top industry pharmaceutical companies. Among the companies profiled are AstraZeneca, Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, Roche, Eli Lilly, Parexel, Quintiles and Wyeth.
